A love song to the handful of "Waifs-and-Strays" children I have unofficially "adopted" over the years. Mostly children of long-standing friends, they are now mostly adults, and we have become friends in our own right.

Here's to my much loved "waifs-and-strays": Louie Whiteley-Waite; Anna Farthing; Little Will Bullock; Will Manwaring; Nia Samuel; with much love. xxx

Lyrics

"Waifs-and-Strays"

Louie’s gone Kiwi
Went and cut the apron strings
Travelled to New Zealand
He’s doing well
But I miss him

Some are adopted
Others begotten
Some are lost
Then found
Or just come around
None are forgotten

These waifs-and-strays
Blow into our lives
Like autumn leaves and
Acorns take root in a fertile soil
Beneath the mighty tree

Little Will
Lay oh so still
In the arms of his Mother
When I saw this new born son
I couldn’t help but fall in love again

Some stay like steady rocks
Others more like jetsam
Come and go
Some stay the course
While most
Bob along
On the ebb-and- flow

These waifs-and-strays
Blow into our lives
Like autumn leaves and
Acorns take root in a fertile soil
Beneath the canopy
