A 6/8 time swinging hymn of thanksgiving for the sheer fact of being alive! My attempt at a hymn, it references Jesus' passion and resurrection. I think one reason I am agnostic is that emotionally, I have always been inclined towards faith; and intellectually, I find agnosticism the most defensible position.

Thanksgiving
Equinox, night and day, split equally
All the clocks on earth rotate in reverse
Time it stops
And from your wooden perch
See the whole universe
No horizons to alert
Stars converse in semaphor
Planets in foreign tongues…morse code,
And metaphor
Wear the rain like a skin
Sink or swim
When the heavens burst
You can quench your thirst
’Midst the bustle and din
Of everyday living
I sing
A hymn
A silent prayer
Of thanksgiving
For everything we have
Everyone that I’ve met
Everything I’ve learned
For my three score years and ten on earth
Only thanksgiving
Solstice, longest night and day, split equally
In between the places that you’ve been
And Galilee
Forgive everyone
Beneath a blazing sun
No horizons to your love
Through the silence now a sound
A harp is struck in the warbler’s ache
I see broken shapes
Gather light now in the dusk
He breathes in the wind and rolls away the rock from the grave

Of everyday living
I sing
A hymn
A silent prayer
Of thanksgiving
For everything I have
Everyone that I’ve met
Everything I’ve learned
For my three score years and ten on earth
Only thanksgiving
Our Father, who art in heaven
Give us this day, our daily bread and
For what we are about to receive
May the Lord make us truly thankful!
