“The Man Who Has Everything” – a song about denying (yourself) love. The protagonist in the song reflects winter landscape – cold, barren, untransversable. They may possess everything, but without love they are nothing. No matter what echelon of material wealth you might achieve, at all levels it is ultimately only really the human relationships that matter.

There is a famous rock-‘n’-roll song called “Money (That’s What I Want)”, covered by many, including my favourite band, the Beatles, but written by Tamla founder Berry Gordy and Janie Bradford, which was the first hit record for Gordy's Motown enterprise.. Famously, the opening lyric goes: “You know the best things in life are free”. This song references two things in life which are exactly that, gratis: sex and sleep. Both are democratic in the sense they are accessible to all. And both a great release. (This reference is incidental, BTW. The main point about the song is not that, but more the nihilism of the denial of love)
